In this hush
between the rising and dusk
of one minute and month
a season arriving
a circle recycling
we see sharp and know cold
that not one thing stands
or stands still
Not one thing untouched
but all carried intact
by love
deep, far and beyond.
I wrote this at the end of 2001, the year my mother died of ovarian cancer, and the year everything seemed to die under a broken blue September sky. The sentiment is no less true in this year or month or day. Nothing stands but the love that carries us beyond. Posted in honor of all the fallen, and to support my friend Katrina Kenison in fundraising specifically for ovarian cancer research. Please consider helping her meet her goal today.
Thank you for this, Maezen!

I have been “off” all day — tense, angry, barely breathing. It wasn’t until mid-day it occurred to me what it was connected to. Last year I was in the hospital after a C-section with a 3-day-old, so the date was submerged amidst all of that. This year, however, I remembered.

Maezen, my friend and fellow teacher died of cancer just this evening. She was a very young mother. She taught kindergarten. This poem can be for Rebekkah too?
